Network Rail's Iris II class 101 unit was working in the area on 18th May, and was to depart from Colchester at 17:50 for stabling at Ipswich overnight.
I decided to go to Brantham and photograph the unit as it came out of the cutting north of the A137, but while sorting myself out on site I heard a train approaching from the south and missed the early running Trafford Park to Felixstowe with a pair of 86s in the sun.
At 5:45 the up Norwich passed and I wandered back to the occupation crossing to capture the Felixstowe to Coatbridge which usually follows 5 minutes behind the up express. I heard a class 90's horn in the distance and readied myself. 90016 approached, a pleasant surprise as I had missed one of the green 90s on Saturday at the same location - then - running almost 10 minutes early, the distinctive raspberry sound of a DMU came from behind as Iris II came past, with me in the wrong spot and totally ruining the shot of 90016.
I decided to call it a day, go home, have a beer and support West Ham for the evening :-( |

Twice in one week at the same spot! 90014 ruins the picture as 66113 approaches on the 6L02 Scunthorpe-Felixstowe containerised steel train. 1000x665 2005_05_132.jpg |
170206 emerges from the cutting at Brantham with a down train - the view I had intended for Iris II 1000x665 2005_05_164.jpg |
90016 approaches with the 4S88 Felixstowe-Coatbridge, but what's this barging in on the picture? 1000x665 2005_05_166.jpg |
Pure chance that they ended up nose to nose at this spot, nothing to do with the photographer! 1000x665 2005_05_167.jpg |
It'll be back another time I suppose... 1000x665 2005_05_168.jpg |
